The work is coming in thick and fast lately and so we have got to that point where we really need to get some more hands to the plough. Specifically we need another LAMP Web Developer pretty quickly. But we could also do with another Visual Designer and maybe even an extra User Experience Architect.

As the Web Developer role is most urgent the details are described in full below. However, if you are interested in joining our team of Graphic Designers (branding, web, print) or User Experience Architects (Wireframing, IA, Interaction Design) then also please get in touch. If you are interested in joining the team then give me a call or email jobs (at sign) digeratistudio.com.

LAMP Web Developer

We are ideally looking for a middleweight developer that can start on a 3 month contract and then hopefully roll into permanent.

Skills needed are:
Classic LAMP with experience of working on websites of all sizes including bespoke CMS, ecommerce, CRM, publication etc.

Us and projects we work on:
Current projects are for various size clients including large publishers, charities, mobile services, online shop and general company sites. Everything we do has a very high user experience focus so we do wireframing and user testing wherever possible.

Working conditions:
Our offices are in central Bath (100 yards from Bath Spa station). We have quite anice environment with a small garden and a chill out room with a Nintendo Wii for when things get too much and you need a break. We are Mac based and every machine has dual display and we can normally accommodate individual preferences (mouse, keyboard etc.). In addition (and stock dependent) we provide all permanent employees with an iPhone 3G including paying your monthly bill.

Working hours:
We operate semi flexible working day where people ONLY work 7.5 hours per day but can start and finish when they prefer - e.g. 8:00 - 4:30 or 10:00 - 6:30. We are very strict about working hours and will not suddenly ask you to do 3 hours work 5 minutes before you go home - we plan so this doesn’t happen. Also there is no working weekends - and did I mention you get to go home on time.

Pay:
Obviously this is dependent on the experience level but we are happy to pay what people are worth.

Why join Digerati Studio:
We are a growing company (3 people a year ago now 9) and we are creating a name for ourselves in Bath with some key clients. We also work with big companies like Orange and so can guarantee a good variety of projects. In addition we love to encourage people to learn and try out new things and I would rely on our development team to advise and direct the company in terms of technical direction. Basically, there are lots of opportunities here and so the right person can really get stuck in and be rewarded for this as we grow.

NOTE: Please no recruitment agents getting in contact because of this posting. Thanks.

This new church has been recently established in a highly multi-cultural area of London and extends wide-ranging diversity through it’s newly defined brand values and online resources.

Now self-managed by the church leaders, their website will continue to grow as it serves it’s new community.

I always dread answering that question. When it’s unavoidable I usually mumble something about the internet, design and try to move the conversation swiftly on before the inevitable questions ensue… So you build websites? …well no I design them then… Ah you’re a computer expert, I’ve keep getting this error message … the computer’s just a tool to… when I click this icon … AHHHH.

The problem is the obvious answer, Web designer, covers so many potential roles from Photoshop monkey to full on CSS developer it has ceased to be a useful term.

Job remits in this still emerging industry often blur into each other. The lines between conceptual, interaction and visual design are necessarily vague and that’s what makes life interesting and yet our jobs as designers hard to define.

Add to that the complication of the occasional piece of print or branding work and all references to the internet become redundant.

Personally I’m still searching for a title {to be used outside of the industry} which is broad enough not to feel like a straight jacket and yet clear enough to non industry peeps. In Digerati I’m known as a visual designer which is the closest I’ve come to this but will still leave most non-designers confused as they see all design as visual.

Here’s the various titles I’ve given myself down the years:
New media designer - Very 90’s
Web designer - Too broad a term
Interaction designer - Too similar to information architect
Graphic Designer - Still associated too heavily with print
Visual Designer - Will confuse non designers
Web Graphics Designer - Doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue
Designer - Far too broad and has a whiff of pretension about it

I’m yet to find one I feel comfortable with, so all suggestions are welcome.

Dave
______ Designer

I found this incredibility helpful tool for Flash that will save hours of time in the development of an animation heavy website. It gives you fine control over the tweening of symbols, something that the in built tween editor should do but in my opinion fails to.

It’s possible to choose from a set of standard motion types like the basic ease-in and bounce or modify them to create your own. The two advantages it has over Flash’s native tweening engine are:

- It’s possible to create complex motion from just two keyframes rather than having to create multiple ones and fine tune each section of the animation

- It can export the motion envelope you’ve create to ActionScript with is a big plus for the developers.

You can download the component for free here http://laco.wz.cz/tween/

This Wednesday and Thursday, the 16th and 17th of July, we’re exhibiting as part of the West of England Design Forum Designers’ Showcase at Paintworks, Bath Road, Bristol.

We’d be really pleased if you could join us. It’s open from 10am - until 6pm Wednesday and 5pm on Thursday.

It’s exciting to be part of this celebration of the local design community. We’re one of more than 50 contributors from all over the South West, each given a blank 8’ x 4′ board, on which to display whatever we want. Naturally, we’ve got something rather special up our sleeve, and so it will be well worth coming along to see. Drop us a line if you’re planning to come along and we’ll get some coffees in.

Have a look at this new BMW concept. (It’s very space-age.) It’s good to see some of these big companies still trying out new ideas and questioning things.

“Do cars have to be made out of metal?” (as a side note, did you know that if every office worker in the UK used one fewer staple per day, we’d save 120 tonnes of steel every year?) …

“Do computers need to have separate processor, monitor, speakers etc or could we throw it all into one tidy package?” …

It makes me wonder how we’ll be looking at designing and building websites, and indeed other areas of design. What paradigms are we following out of pure habit, that instead we ought to be questioning? What things are we doing just because “that’s the way we do it here”?
